BORROWED THOUGHTS (2023 - )
Borrowed Thoughts is an ongoing artwork project based on collecting thoughts - thoughts that aren't the artist's, but rather those borrowed from others. The concept for the piece came to the artist as an idea to move away from her own everyday thoughts and out of her curiosity about the thoughts of others: what kind of thoughts do they experience, and what are they willing to share?
The starting point for the work was to invite people to participate by sharing a thought of their choice. The only instruction was that the thought had to be theirs and that they could choose whichever one they wished to share. They could either share it immediately in person or take their time, think about it, and send it via message or email.
The project involves a growing collection of thoughts from friends, family members, colleagues, acquaintances and passers-by. Once collected, each thought is hand-sewn in black thread onto transparent nylon foil stretched inside in a wooden embroidery hoop, which itself becomes a part of the artwork. Suspended from clear nylon lines, the individual pieces compose a site-specific ceiling installation, visually suggesting thoughts floating through space. The setup allows visitors to move freely through it and read other people’s thoughts.
